I am endeavoring to write a feminist dating sim. I’ve been playing a few of them lately, and I’m sooo tired of their tropey sexist bullshit. I like the idea of a dating sim; it’s cute, and it has potential. Which is why it’s that much sadder that they’re all EXACTLY THE SAME.

Some features I intend to include:
1) different gender options for the protagonist
2) male and female love interests of varying orientations (who are not all straight white(?) skinny pretty boys)
3) more choices—that is, more opportunity to affect the storyline
4) related to number 3, choices to argue with or get pissed off at your love interest if he/she says something that offends you

Some features I intend to completely exclude:
1) cliché anime boy tropes, i.e., the naughty flirty one, the douchebag tsundere, the scary-looking one who’s actually really nice, the childhood friend, etc.
2) “you can’t/shouldn’t do such-and-such, since you’re a girl.” “Oh well, I guess you’re right.”
3) “you look really ugly.”/”you’re so stupid.” “That’s mean!”
4) random heart palpitations, blurred vision, sudden paralysis, etc.
5) “damsel in distress” scenarios
6) "Wow, he's so gorgeous!"/"Ooh he's so cool; I can't even speak."

Unfortunately, it's too early to go into much detail. v.v I think I’m going to try to do three boys and three girls. I’ll have to do one at a time, of course, so this is going to be a lengthy project—but I think it could really go somewhere! Aaand if I'm lucky, I'm going to have a little help (okay maybe a lot of help) with the visual aspect, too~ I’m actually really excited about it. >.>

In the meantime, those of you who are interested in this sort of thing should let me know about any other features or character traits or plot events, etc. you'd like to see included. I mean it: feedback from you guys would be really helpful. If you've played a dating sim before, tell me what you did or didn't like. Tell me what you look for when you do play them. Every comment I get will help to improve the finished product~

Hmmm, okay, how about this. What if you made some of your characters not conventionally attractive? By this, I don't just mean "not bishie" or "not Playboy model," no, no. More something like, say, one of them is seriously fat, or looks like a stereotypical "nerd," or has a physical handicap (a wheelchair, for example, or blindness. something that makes it so the other party in the date has to put it a little effort to make everything go smoothly, holding the door open, say, or guiding their date towards the table). People like that get put aside far too often in life.
